An R Package for the inference in a multi-state illness-death model

Luís Meira-Machado, Department of Mathematics and Applications, University of Minho, Portugal

In many medical studies, patients can experience several events. If the events represent different states, they are usually modeled through their intensity functions via the so-called multi-state models. In the multi-state framework, issues of interest include the study of the relationship between covariates and disease evolution and the estimation of transition probabilities. In this work we consider these two topics, using p3state.msm a software application for R. We describe the capabilities of the program for estimating semi-parametric regression models and for implementing nonparametric estimators for several quantities. We are currently working on a new R-based package which will implement several methods for estimating the transition probabilities. A brief presentation of this package will also be given.
